The Vice President of Nigeria, Yemi Osinbajo, alongside Minister of State for Labour and Productivity, Prof. Stephen Ocheni, political adviser to the President, Babajide Ojudu, senior presidential aides, security officers and aircraft crew, escaped death on February 2, when their chartered helicopter crash landed in Kappa Township Stadium, Kogi State.
Josiah Choms, an executive of air charter service, Caverton Helicopters Limited blamed “unusual weather conditions” for the crash. They have since issued a new helicopter to the vice president.
The VP was on a mission to visit Kabba, Idah and Okene for the presidential campaign rally in Kogi State and was enroute when the tail of the chopper conveying the VP and others got caught in one of the parked vehicles, causing the chopper to tumble several times and the wings to get severed from its body.
Everyone on board was successfully evacuated and reportedly unhurt and the VP was taken away immediately to a hotel to rest, after which he proceeded to the palace of His Royal majesty, Oba Solomon Owoniyi, the Obaro of Kabba, and Chairman of Okun Traditional Council.
VP Osinbajo later tweeted his appreciation to God for the lives of everyone on board and the crew of the aircraft for handling the crisis well. He also thanked well-wishers for their prayers and added that the campaign would not stop but continue.
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Bukola Saraki, presidential aspirant Atiku Abubakar and many other Nigerians from different religious and political affiliations have reacted to the incident:
