These projections reflect the writer’s personal impressions from publicly available information (release dates, genres, talent rosters and teasers/trailers often offer valuable clues), historical considerations (how other films with similar pedigrees have resonated), precursor awards (some awards groups have historically correlated with the Academy more than others) and research into commentaries and opinions of industry insiders (including fellow members of the press, awards strategists, filmmakers and awards voters).

All is set for the biggest night in global film entertainment. The 91st Academy Awards, popularly referred to as the OSCARS, will be held tomorrow, February 24, 2019, at the Dolby Theatre, Los Angeles, California, and it will honour the best films of 2018.

Film aficionados in Nigeria would be more excited knowing they are represented with the presence of Nigerian filmmakers; film and television veteran, Femi Odugbemi and celebrated actress, Omotola Jalade Ekeinde, who in 2018 were admitted as voting members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), organizers of the OSCARS.

Critically acclaimed films such as Black Panther, Roma, and A Star is Born, all scored multiple nominations and have been projected to have major wins at the ceremony.

The award ceremony is highly revered by filmmakers across the world, with nominees going as far as spending at least six months attending red carpets, talk shows, Q. & A.s, panel discussions, and press interviews, as part of their nominated films’ campaign efforts to win the coveted golden statuette.

Though it must be noted that for years, there has been a dissonance between commercially successful (and popular) movies and OSCAR-nomination-worthy movies. Black Panther is changing that narrative, being the first superhero movie to receive a Best Picture (Biggest Prize) nomination.
