Lizzo has released her first new track in two years, and in the process, she’s addressing some rumors. The musician collaborates with none other than fellow Atlantic Records signee Cardi B on her current single, “Rumors.” The Grammy-winning duo came together for their release, adorned in gold and laurel crowns and surrounded by sculptures and Greek hydria, to validate all the ludicrous things people have said about them. Rather than refuting the inaccurate accusations, Lizzo and Cardi are facing up to the fact that, based on their professional achievement, they will continue to stay on top because “haters do what they do.”
Lizzo, who has been a strong champion for self-acceptance and body positivity, has received backlash for enjoying herself and having fun while dancing on social media throughout her career. Lizzo criticises everyone and everything in the new song, including body shamers, Internet dietitians, and Instagram bullies. In the lyrics, she expresses her displeasure with the criticism she has received and is adamantly unrepentant. “If you thought that I was ratchet with my (expletive) hanging out, just wait until the summer when they let me out the house,” she sings, implying that she will ultimately be able to escape the pandemic lockdown.
Later in the song, Cardi B appears wearing an ethereal gold breast piece with her second pregnancy with the Migos rapper, Offset. In the video, she recounts some of the accusations she’s gotten about herself, including body surgeries, fraudulent streams, and even FCC complaints about her “freaky” Grammys performance with Megan Thee Stallion. Despite the backlash, the “Bodak Yellow” rapper responds. “I’m calmed down and I’m locked in, and my records live in the top ten.”
This is Lizzo’s first official single since her critically acclaimed major label debut Cuz I Love You in 2019. The album featured 11 tracks with additional features from Missy Elliott and Gucci Mane and the sleeper hits “Truth Hurts” and “Good as Hell,” which were released in 2017 and 2016 respectively. The deluxe versions of the project were later added with collaborations from DaBaby, AB6IX, and Ariana Grande. The Texas-born performer won three Grammy Awards for the project: a best urban contemporary album for Cuz I Love You (Deluxe); best pop solo performance for “Truth Hurts,” her first Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 song; and best traditional R&B performance for “Jerome.”
Earlier this month, Lizzo teased the release of ‘Rumors.’ She has previously released a video of herself and Mark Ronson working together in the studio. Lizzo revealed the collaboration with Cardi B in a video uploaded on Instagram. In the video, Cardi picks up the phone after she displays her FaceTime with a contact named “RUMORS” Feat… Lizzo had some jokes for her fans, who may or may not have been pleased to see her collaborate with a former member of One Direction on the Rumors remix, who may or may not be Harry Styles.
