Doesn’t it look flabbergasting to folks of open minds, good reasoning and right judgement that, the white-bearded baboon-like-cheek, and Gwari-born Niger state, former Nigeria Military Gen Abdulsalami A. Abubakar, is one of the conveners of the National Peace Committee (NPC), on election matters since 2015?
In fact, he is the Chairman of that National Peace Committee, initiated and inaugurated in 2015, during President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan’s regime, whose, supposedly primary purpose and assignment is to prevail on whoever loses out in an election to concede defeat and congratulate whoever the Independent National Electoral Commission – INEC, declares winner.
This was the arrangement Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar-led National Peace Committee, used to cajole former President Goodluck Jonathan to concede early defeat even before INEC Chairman, Prof. Jega’s fraudulent result was announced, which, gave Mr. Muhammadu Buhari a rigged edge over the incumbent, President Goodluck Jonathan, in 2015.
This was in 2015, and eventually became a norm which played out in similar fashion in 2019, Presidential election.
From the charade called, the agreement mandates that the candidates agree “to run issue-based campaigns at national, state and local government levels, I adduced the following excerpts:
- In, this, we pledge to refrain from campaigns that will involve religious incitements, ethnic or tribal profiling, both by ourselves and by all agents in our names.
- To refrain from making or causing to make in our names and that of our party, any public statements, pronouncements, declarations or speeches that have the capacity to incite any form of violence, before, during and after the elections.
- To commit ourselves and political parties to the monitoring of the adherence to this Accord by a National Peace Committee made up of respected statesmen and women, traditional and religious leaders.
- To support all institutions of government including INEC and the security agencies to act and be seen to act with impartially.
- To forcefully and publicly speak out against provocative utterances and oppose all acts of electoral violence whether perpetuat by our supporters and/or opponents”
Now, from all that played out in this election, would it be said that Buhari was sincere to the binding principles of that agreement?
Away from that, my worry is; does this former Military General Abdulsalami Abubakar have moral justification(s) to Chair such National Peace Committee which requires high pedigree of moral values, and impeccable integrity status considering his antecedents as Nigeria’s 8th Military Head of State from June 9, 1998- May 29, 1999?
Recall that he was fingered culpable in Nigeria’s worst bribery scandal of all times – the $182 million Halliburton bribery scandal which most Nigerians thought would have form topmost priority on the list of Buhari’s
Hello! Where is the place of integrity in Buhari’s regime, when the man that supposed to play guest with EFCC on his involvement in Halliburton bribery scandal has been hobnobbing and working for him.
I want to say this unequivocally that the so-called Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar-led National Peace Committee is nothing but a ruse, charade, and rape, an aberration of what true and transparent peace accord stood for.
There is no iota of sincerity in that committee, they are deceptively epitome of unsuspecting rigging machinery. And, never again would that committee be recognize by Nigerians henceforth.
How do I mean?
In ancient Orika Kingdom, there is this local lingo that says “Onye na ebon ogbugbor, buruzor buo unu” (He that want to prevent throw up – vomit, should first stop what triggers throw up). This is vital ingredients in any sincere peace accord, which, was conspicuously ignored by Abdulsalami-led National Peace Committee.
This was what played out in this 2019, Presidential election, which, was grossly rigged by the All Progressives Congress (APC), using the apparatus of federal might to consolidate Buhari’s earlier boasts with impunity, that nobody can unseat him.
Obviously threatened with his body language to use whatever weapon – the Military, the police, our national treasury via bullion vans, INEC, and thugs at his disposal to accomplish his hold on to power beyond 2019.
Laughably, Gen. Abdulsalami and his so-called peace committee were expected to issue stern warnings to all political parties and their candidates to desist from any act capable of undermining the peaceful, free and fair conducts of the national elections, probably threatened to cancel the entire process, including INEC, should any party or it’s agents is found manipulating the process.
Disappointedly, they heard, and saw verifiable video clips of anti-peace activities perpetrated by some notorious miscreants in many states like in Rivers state, Lagos state, where some areas of Oshodi and Okota, where under attack by one MC Oluomo, and Ademola who displayed the ruddiest election crime of the time by snatching, and smashing ballot boxes of with voted ballot papers and set the materials ablaze in the very presence of Nigeria police officer, and under the purviews of Mr. President.
Hitherto, nothing was done by Nigeria law enforcement agents to deter similar acts in future, neither did the so-called National Peace Committee, issued at least press conference to condemn this barbaric behavior, only for Mr. Abdulsalami Abubakar, and Bishop Kukah to lurk in the secret to persuade Waziri Atiku Abubakar to concede defeat to Buhari. This is crazy!
Howbeit, I congratulate Waziri Atiku Abubakar, for his confidence, doggedness, resilience, courage, and bold steps he taken to seek redress through legal procedures to reclaim his stolen mandate, by shunning Abdulsalami’s gimmicks to compromise his mandate.
Though he may be denied justice by reason of Nigeria-type judicial system, where, the law is respecter of persons, and Mr. President’s body language is superior than whatever be the positions of Nigeria Constitution.
Be it as it may, it would go down in history that, there was a President in Nigeria, whose names are, Mr. Muhammadu Buhari, who ruled Nigeria as a Military Head of state from 1983-1985, and, as a Democratically elected President from 2015-2023.
During these inglorious regimes, nepotism, religious bigotry, sectionalism, disunity, tribalism, pogrom, insecurity, decimation of hated tribes, high profile corruption, vindictiveness, injustice, greed, economic recession, dishonesty, deceitfulness, and lies with impunity were promoted and redefined as INTEGRITY in Nigeria context. Pity!
I weep for the people of my generation.
